NEW DELHI, DEC. 21. The Army today dismissed a Gorkha Rifles officer, Maj. Surinder Singh, for faking encounters for personal glory in the Siachen Glacier in August-September last year. A court martial in Jodhpur also sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment. Maj. Singh was found guilty of staging fake encounters in which Indian soldiers posed as dead Pakistani soldiers. Videotapes of the encounters with these fake Pakistani troops were shown by the 14 Corps Commander, Arvind Sharma, (the seniormost officer of the troops stationed in Siachen and nearby areas) to officers at the Defence Staff College. Holding Maj. Surinder Singh guilty, the Army did not agree that the entire chain of command should be held culpable. Officers claim that Lt. Gen. Sharma showed only a small portion of the video to upcoming officers depicting the "bravery" of men under his command. Maj. Singh's commanding officer, K. D. Singh, was taken in by the fake reports presented to him and had recommended the Major's name for a gallantry award.
