By Our Staff Reporter
WARANGAL, DEC. 21. The district administration has acquired about 5,000 acres of land as against the State Government's target of 3,500 acres to be distributed to the landless on January 26. However, according to sources, the district administration would distribute the targeted 3,500 acres on the day the Government had decided to distribute one lakh acres to about 1,700 beneficiaries. The remainder would be given after the ongoing survey was completed. Officials in the Revenue Department said a survey was on to identify the landless poor village-wise and the Government/ceiling land available in each village. It was expected to be completed by the last week of February. Surplus land Though Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs) in several mandals submitted details of surplus land, a majority of it was either in litigation or pending for forest clearance. For example, in Mangapet, according to the records, over 4,000 acres of surplus was shown, but it belonged to the Forest Department. Similarly, 6,630 acres of land was identified in Warangal, Jangoan, Mulug, Mahabubabad and Narasampet mandal, but over 1,500 cases were pending in various courts over ownership of the land. The district administration had initiated enquiries under the AP (TA) Inam Abolition Act, 1955, and proposes to acquire it within two years. The district administration had also embarked itself upon probing regularisation of sales to facilitate issue of pattadar passbooks and occupation of patta lands by various political parties. Dismissing the claims of various people's organisations that there existed over one lakh surplus land in the district, the officials pointed out that the land was already assigned to the poor under various schemes. However, they admit that about 40 per cent of beneficiaries either disowned the land for lack of investment or sold away for domestic reasons. This time, the officials have decided to link land distribution with bank loan enabling the beneficiaries to take up farming immediately and turn the land into a source of income.
