MADURAI, DEC.21. Employees of general insurance companies staged a demonstration in front of the United India Insurance's Regional Office here today pressing a charter of demands. Their protest was part of a nation-wide strike against foreign direct investment and privatisation of insurance sector and for wage revision. The work at insurance offices was paralysed. The strike was total in southern districts. According to a release from S. Balasubramanian, general secretary, General Insurance Employees Association, Madurai Region, despite private companies venturing into insurance sector, the general insurance companies retained 86 per cent of the market share and earned Rs.1600 crores as profit, which was double the target last year.
