Prostitution racket busted

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 21. An alleged pimp and five women have been arrested by the East Delhi police on charges of running a prostitution racket in a residential apartment at Pandav Nagar in East Delhi. The accused woman had claimed to be operating a physiotherapy clinic.

The police said they gathered information about the suspected racket over the past fortnight and sent a decoy customer to the residence of the woman on Monday. After the deal was struck, the police arrested the woman, identified as Ranjana Parashar, and five other women, aged between 20 and 22.

During interrogation, the accused claimed that her husband had met with an accident about a couple of years ago and she had run into financial crisis. She apparently began indulging in prostitution and later roped in a few girls. The police, however, said investigations do not indicate that the accused was under any financial crisis and that she was running the racket for monetary benefit.

According to the police, the accused did not have any documentary proof of her being a trained physiotherapist, which she claimed she was. She managed to rope in the first couple of girls from her native place in Uttaranchal. The rest joined in after they came to know about the racket by word of mouth. The police said the accused did not seem to have lured the girls into a trap but the promise of good money probably drew the girls into the racket. The accused also told the police that the clients were entertained in the absence of her children and husband during the day.

Meanwhile, a case under the Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act has been registered at Pandav Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
