dated December 23, 1954: Standards in music

Presiding over the 28th conference of the Madras Music Academy on December 22 at the Sundareswarar Hall, Mylapore, Madras. Vidwan Chittoor Subrahmanya Pillai, Head of the Music Department of the Annamalai University, stressed the need for maintaining high standards in the art which tradition had built for it. In this task, he said, the vidwans and institutions for the promotion of music should take a leading and active part. Sangita Kalanidhi T.V. Subba Rao read and presented a welcome address to Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, who declared the conference open. In his speech, Mr. Krishnamachari said that it looked as if it was a short time ago that the Academy was started. Yet 27 years had passed. Dr. U. Rama Rao was its first President and he was followed by Mr. K.V. Krishnaswami Aiyar, a person whose work, in whichever field it be, was characterised by the highest degree of efficiency and conscientious effort. The success of the Academy and its standing to-day was proof of his perseverance, steadfastness and single-purpose devotion. They could now feel assured that the Academy had moved from the troubles of infancy and adolescence into healthy and virile youth. Reference had been made in the address, Mr. Krishnamachari continued, to the need for a building and a music hall for the Academy and also for Government aid in this connection. If they systematically organised collection of even one-rupee contributions, they would soon be able to raise the requisite fund for building a suitable hall. He believed the Government would also help. He hoped music lovers and people well placed would liberally help in this direction. Sangita Kalanidhi Mudikondan Venkatarama Aiyar proposing Ms. Subrahmanya Pillai for the Presidentship said it was a great honour to all that a vidwan of such stature was presiding over the conference. Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu seconded the proposition.
