Campus Jottings: Tapping talents of students

Inter-collegiate competitions help students to tap their talents and colleges to know their place in respect of standards.

Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) National College at Thanjavur has been conducting inter-collegiate competitions in various subjects on December 21 and 22.

According to A. Susairaj, Principal, students from 11 colleges participated in the competitions, which cover topics like business quiz, debugging contest, managerial skills, leadership skills and marketing skills, product launch-marketing eminence and cultural programmes.

T. Bojapathy, senior advocate, who inaugurated the competitions, deplored that students prefer to go abroad after completing their studies.

Though globalisation could be accepted, they should serve our country since it had given elementary and collegiate education to them.

They can go abroad to widen their knowledge and learn latest technologies in different fields but should return to serve their motherland.

A four-day AIDS awareness camp, organised by the National Service Scheme volunteers of Naina Mohammed College at Aranthangi commenced at the college campus on Monday.

Several programmes were arranged as part of the camp, which was inaugurated by the College founder-correspondent N. Mohammed Farook.

The Rajendrapuram panchayat president, M. Shanmughanathan, the NSS Coordinator of Bharathidasan University, R. Veerasekaran, participated in the function.

A group discussion on AIDS awareness was held. The group comprising Radhika, Eswari and Bhakyalakshmi was adjudged as the best.

A compact disc show on AIDS will be held on Thursday and the valedictory function will be held on Friday.

A special lecture on `recent developments in photography' was organised at J.J. College of Arts and Science here recently.

Cinematographer K. Abdul Rahuman was the resource person for the lecture, which was organised by the Department of Visual Communication.

He traced the development of various lighting techniques employed in cinema and recounted his experience with camera. He explained the effect of lighting besides throwing light on working of movie cameras, drawbacks of digital cameras compared to movie camera in picture quality aspects.

The lecture was followed by a question and answer session in which students and faculty members participated.

Under the auspices of Thanthai Hans Roever College in Perambalur, a 11-day special NCC camp was inaugurated on Wednesday. Over 750 cadets from 13 colleges and 14 schools participated in the camp.

According to the NCC Officer, Thomas Joseph Prakash, the cadets would be exposed to various sessions such as physical training, firing, map reading, weapon training and personality development.

Students cleaned and planted saplings. Several cultural programmes would be organised. Students have volunteered to devote time for proper upkeep of the Government Hospital in Perambalur.

Colnel P. James and Lieutenant Colonel, D.R.Rana from the NCC Group Headquarters, Tiruchi, along with junior commanding officers and assistant NCC officers coordinated the camp.

A refresher course in English for government college teachers on different teaching strategies, organised under the joint auspices of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Chennai, and the Department of English, Holy Cross College, helped the teachers update themselves on the subject besides imbibing new strategies for reaching out to students in an effective way.

Inaugurating the function, the former Registrar of Bhrathidasan University, Ayothi, emphasised the importance of exposure to English for language learners.

Pointing out the role of language laboratories in the teaching and learning process, he suggested that the quality of teaching be improved by shifting focus from teacher to learner.

The former head, Department of English, Arulandar College, Madurai, S. Vincent, spoke on various aspects of listening and speaking skills, stressing the need for conducting simple conversations based on contextual language learning.

D.E. Bennet, English lecturer, National College, touched upon some of the innovative teaching strategies that could bridge the intellectual distance between the teacher and the learner.

Joseph Durairaj, professor, Department of English, Gandhigram University, held a session on writing skills and elaborated on the different stages of writing, listed out some of the common problems faced by students and suggested methods to solve them.

P.N. Ramani, Head, English Department, Saranathan College of Engineering, spoke on Internet as a source of knowledge and a teaching tool for teachers.

Later, a two-day exhibition on self-learning conducted by students of English literature and General English was declared open by the principal, Sr. Rosy.

Cauvery College for Women has constituted a permanent cell to combat sexual harassment and violence against women. In association with the Development Organisation for Women Trust, a non-governmental organisation, the cell will conduct periodical legal awareness programmes for educating college girls on various legal aids available to them.

Inaugurating a two-day training recently, the college principal, V. Sujatha, explained the need to empower women. The training would be a catalyst for social transformation, she said.
