APPSC to abide by Government

decision on Group-I posts

HYDERABAD DEC. 22. The Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission, P. Ramulu, has said that the Commission will abide by whatever decision the Government takes with regards to increase in the number of posts for Group- I services.

Speaking to reporters after calling on the Governor, S.K Shinde, at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, Mr. Ramulu, said that the Commission was waiting for the Government decision. "We are ready to implement whatever directions the Government gives as the Commission is fully prepared." He said the examinations would be held as per schedule.

Lifer for six in murder case

CUDDAPAH: Six persons were sentenced to life imprisonment and seven others accused were acquitted in the Kodigandlapalle murder case by the Proddatur II Additional District Magistrate, Sahadevudu, on Wednesday.

Rayapati Venkata Reddy, Rayapati Ramanjaneyulu Reddy, Rayapati Bheema Reddy, Korrapdu Rami Reddy, Korrapadu Thimma Reddy and Kadiyam Rami Reddy were sentenced to life-term on the charge of murdering a Congress activist, Yerrapureddu Ramachandra Reddy, in Kodigandlapalle village of Muddanur mandal in Jammalamadugu constituency on December 4, 1999.

Those acquitted were - Rayapati Thirupal Reddy, Rayapati Pedda Venkata Reddy, Kadiyam Ramasubba Reddy, Rayapati Pedda Venkatasubba Reddy, Rayapati Chinna Venkata Reddy, Rayapati Chinna Bali Reddy and Chinnaboyina Balasubba Reddy, for want of evidence of their complicity. The accused as well as those acquitted were TDP functionaries.

Plea against BC panel

HYDERABAD: The power of the Backward Classes Commission to make recommendations pertaining to reservations in educational institutions was challenged in the High Court on Wednesday.

"B.C. Mitrulu,'' represented by its convenor Kondala Rao, filed a writ petition in the High Court. The petitioners brought to the notice of a Division Bench comprising Justice B. Sudershan Reddy and Justice M. Narayana Reddy various provisions of the A.P. Commission of Backward Classes Act and contended that the Act referred to reservations regarding public employment only but not reservations in educational institutions. The Bench admitted the case and posted the matter for final hearing on January 18.

Nominated to Handicrafts Board

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti youth wing organising secretary, Karnati Srinivas, has been nominated as a member of the All-India Handicrafts Board, Union Ministry of Textiles. The term of the newly constituted board, headed by the Minister for Textiles, is two years.

AITUC to organise workers

Hyderabad: The new team of AITUC office-bearers has announced that they will concentrate on "organising workers in the unorganised sector" during the three years of their tenure.

Addressing the press here on Wednesday, the AITUC vice-president, B. Rama Rao, and general secretary, P. J. Chandra Sekhara Rao, said that the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Union had recently been affiliated to AITUC and efforts were being made to organise beedi-makers, `hamalis' and rickshaw-pullers into trade unions.

They said that the AITUC was planning to organise them to fight for ESI cover, provident fund, housing benefits and safety issues.

Mala Mahanadu plans protest

HYDERABAD: The Mala Mahanadu has decided to organised State-wide "rasta-roko" and "rail-roko" agitations on December 27 to press its demand for scrapping of SCs' categorisation as ruled by the Supreme Court.

P.V. Rao, president, said in a statement here on Wednesday that the agitation would be against the MRPS demand for enactment of legislation for categorisation in the Lok Sabha and opposing the resolution adopted by the State Assembly. It would convene a meeting here on January 5 of student representatives of universities in the State.

This would be followed by a meet of the Mala sarpanches, mandal presidents, ZPTCs, MPTCs on January 6 and Mala advocates practising in the high court and lower courts on January 7.

Woman, 2 daughters end lives

MAHBUBNAGAR: A woman, along with her two daughters, committed suicide by consuming pesticide near Kachwar village, about 9 km away from Makthal town, last night. The police recovered the bodies this morning after they were informed by villagers.

The deceased were identified as Bhagyalaxmi (37) and her daughters Sadhana (14) and Bhargava (11) residents of Mahbubnagar town.

Three IAS officers shuffled

HYDERABAD: The State Government today shuffled three IAS officers. N. Ramesh Kumar has been appointed Secretary, Housing, in place of T.K. Diwan, Special Chief Secretary, who has been shifted as Commissioner, Land Administration. On transfer, S. Anwar has been posted as Special Chief Secretary to the Governor, according to orders issued by the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda.

Vaikuntha Ekadasi celebrated

KHAMMAM: Thousands of devotees had the Vaikunthadwara darshanam at the Sri Seetaramachandraswamy temple in Bhadrachalam today. Special services marked the occasion in the shrine. The Vaikuntha Ekadasi, which followed the 10-day long Dasavatara Mahotshavams in the temple, was considered to the most auspicious occasion.

The devotees, who came from far off places, made a beeline to the temple for darshan. The temple town echoed Vedic hymns in the early hours.

Sarpanches

elected

CUDDAPAH: Five sarpanches were unanimously elected in Cuddapah district. Prabhakar Reddy was elected unopposed as Nagulapalle sarpanch in Chapadu mandal, Bandi Deva Prasad as Chintakunta sarpanch in Muddanur mandal, Guntimadugu Narayana Raju as Kurnuthala sarpanch in Lakkireddipalle mandal and Singareddigari Kona Chenna Reddy as Kondasunkesula sarpanch and Peddireddy Ramamohana Reddy as Bhoothamarpuram, both of Peddamudiyam mandal.

Meanwhile, all the six contestants in Peddarangapuram panchayat in Pulivendula mandal withdrew, leaving none in fray for the sarpanch post.

Appointed

TIRUPATI: The State president of the `Rayalaseema Hakkula Ikya Vedika' and former Kurnool MLA, T.G.Venkatesh, has appointed Suresh Kumar convenor of the Vedika's Tirupati town committee.

Protest planned

CHITTOOR: The district Mala Mahanadu will conduct dharna, rail roko and rasta roko in a big way on December 27 if the Government fails to implement the Supreme Court judgment against SC categorisation, said S. Munaswamy, convenor of the district Mala Mahanadu Committee, Shanmugam, president, and Rajakumar, organising secretary.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, they said the Supreme Court had set aside the High Court order supporting categorisation.

Thatched houses gutted

NELLORE: A cluster of thatched houses were guttted in Nandipadu village of Duttalur mandal last night, resulting in loss of clothes, paddy and ornaments. It was said to be an accident. All the belongings were reduced to ashes, even before the arrival of fire tenders.

Thrift groups' meet

NELLORE: A convention of thrift groups will be held at the mandal parishad office of Vinjamoor on Thursday. All the groups have been asked to attend with passbooks.
