NEW DELHI, DEC. 22. The Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure, P.G.R. Sindhia, today called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and apprised him of the decision of the State Government clearing the Bangalore International Airport Greenfield Project. Mr. Sindhia also raised the issue of the proposal of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission to set up a petrochemical plant in the special economic zone in Mangalore. The Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry had expressed some doubts over the implementation of the Rs. 25,000-crore project. Briefing presspersons, Mr. Sindhia said the Prime Minister had assured the State Government need not have any apprehension and directed officials to take action with the Ministry concerned. The Prime Minister, he said, also expressed happiness over the clearance of the airport project and showed interest in the growth in agriculture sector in the State.
Other airports
The Minister also met the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel, and informed him of the developments with regard to the airport project. He told the Union Minister that once the airport became operational, it would have an impact on the air traffic requirements of other destinations in the State. Mr. Sindhia reminded the Union Minister of the need to develop and commission the Mysore airport by September 2005 so that international travellers could visit the Dasara festival; develop the Mangalore airport as an international airport and to develop Hassan and Gulbarga airports to cater to both tourist and business travellers.
