CM hands over compensation
CHENNAI Dec. 22. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today handed over a cheque for Rs. five lakhs to the wife of deputy tashildar, A.R.Venkatesan, who was fatally run over by a lorry earlier this month when he attempted to prevent the driver of the vehicle from fleeing with sand illegally quarried from Manapakkam near Chengalpattu. The amount was given from the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund, according to a press release. The CM also distributed cash prize totaling Rs 13.50 lakhs to members of Tamil Nadu shooting team which won the J.Jayalalithaa Rolling cup and gold medals at the 48th all-India Police Shooting Competition, held in Indore last month. The State team won 2543 points out of 3420 points in the competition.
Fire destroys poultry farm
TIRUNELVELI DEC. 22. Over 10,000 broiler chicken died in a fire at Kaavalkinaru, about 65 km from here today. Firetenders from Valliyoor and the Indian Space Research Organisation's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Mahendragiri doused the flames. The police said the fire broke out in one of the huts of contract labourers of the LPSC and fanned by strong winds spread to the poultry farm housed in thatched shed. Fifty huts and a two-wheeler were also destroyed.
Pension for freedom fighters
CHENNAI Dec. 22. The Tamil Nadu Government today a sanctioned a state pension of Rs. 3,000 and a medical allowance of Rs. 15 each a month to four freedom fighters. The beneficiaries, V.Jothidam Periya Karuppathevar of Theni district, K.S.R.Ramasami and K.Thavamani of Madurai district and V.Govindasami of Tiruvannamalai district had requested the Chief Minister to sanction them state pension. The Government also sanctioned a monthly pension of Rs. 1,500 and a medical allowance of Rs. 15 to R. Mangalam, widow of freedom fighter Raja of Madurai district. The District Collectors will hand over the sanction orders to the beneficiaries, says an official release.
3 killed in van-mini lorry smash
MADURAI DEC. 22. Three persons were killed and four others injured when a van collided with a mini-lorry on the ring road near Tirumangalam today. The deceased are P. Jeyaraman (27), a doctor, and his father, V. Palanivel (60), and R. Krishnamoorthy (60). Palanivel's another son, Saravanaperumal, a medical officer of the government hospital at Periyakulam and his daughter, Aswithai (6), Selvakumar (27) and Chandrasekar (60) were admitted to a private hospital here. The police said the victims were returning home after a pilgrimage to Sabarimala, when a paper-laden lorry hit the van. The driver, R. Puliyan, was arrested.
BSNL schemes
CHENNAI DEC. 22. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Chennai Telephones has announced new schemes and services for its customers. Customers who paid telephone bills for Rs.2,000 or more during the festival offer from October 22 to November 30 can collect free India Telephone Cards from their customer service centres on production of the bill copy. The offer is valid only upto December 31. Cellone post-paid cusotmers can get reconnection without payment of the rental for the disconnected period on a nominal payment of Rs.200 and any other dues in instalments, if required. The scheme is open only for January. Customers can now register for the BSNL Broadband service, to be launched shortly through its web site:www.Chennai.bsnl.co.in
Medical sciences academy
CHENNAI DEC. 22. The State branch of the International Medical Sciences Academy (IMSA) was inaugurated by M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor of Annamalai University and member of parliament, at Chidambaram. The IMSA is a global organisation established in 1982 with headquarters in New Delhi and regional offices in America, Australia, rest of Asia, Africa, Europe and India.
AIEEE application forms
CHENNAI DEC. 22. The All- India Engineering Entrance Examination will be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on May 8, 2005. Application forms will be sold by the identified branches/institutions. Aspirants are advised to send their forms individually only by Speed Post/registered post. In no case, would the forms sent in bulk by private institutions be accepted by the CBSE.
One arrested
for assault
TUTICORIN DEC. 22. The police today arrested one Senthil, on a charge of assaulting Sudalai (60) with a sickle due to previous enmity sickle at Kulasekarapattinam near here on Tuesday. Sudalai was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital with serious injuries on head, shoulder and stomach. The police are in search of the others involved in the case Kannan, Kandhan, Mani and Mookkan.
Man attacked
TUTICORIN DEC. 22. The police are on the look out for one Antony Pitchai and his friend, Antony Raj, for attacking one Anandaraj (32) with a knife and inflicting injuries on his hip and neck, here, on Tuesday. Police said the attack was the result of a strained relationship between the two over some business dealings. Anandaraj was admitted to Tuticorin Government Hospital.
CPI demo
TUTICORIN DEC. 22. The Communist Party of India workers staged demonstrations at different parts of the district on Tuesday, demanding the authorities to distribute compensation to farmers who had lost their cattle due to the outbreak of bluetongue disease. The police said while 25 party workers took part in the demonstration at Kayatar, 20 took part at Ettayapuram.

TIRUNELVELI DEC. 22. The Pettai police have arrested a person who was allegedly involved in chain snatching incidents in and around Tirunelveli recently. Police said Michael (45) of MGR Nagar near Pettai was picked up by the police when he was suspiciously moving around. On interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the crimes. Police also seized a gold chain of nine sovereigns worth Rs. 40,000 from him.
Award for college teacher
SIVAKASI DEC.22. The Professor and Head of the Department of Physics, Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, V. Rajendran, has received the National Non-Destructive Testing Man of the Year 2004 award for his overall research and development contributions in the field of ultrosonic non-destructive testing. The award, instituted by the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing, was given at the national seminar on NDE-2004 held in Pune recently. Dr. Rajendran is presently working on nanotechnology and co-ordinating the Nanomaterials Science and Technology Research Centre at the college.

NAGERCOIL DEC. 22. The Collector, Ramesh Chand Meena, has declared Friday as the local holiday in view of Christmas festival. Instead, 12.2.2005 (second Saturday) will be a working day, said a press release.

Special buses
MADURAI DEC.22. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will ply special bus services from here to Nagercoil from December 23 to January 2 in view of the Christmas festival and New Year celebrations, according to a press release from the TNSTC.
