`Milestones are for tourists'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
DEC. 22.
The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, today criticised the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's statement objecting to the use of Hindi in milestones on national highways.
The milestones had Devanagiri script which was common to Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sindhi and Sanskrit, he pointed out. "Tourists from all over India come to Tamil Nadu. Therefore, milestones in Devanagiri and Tamil script will serve the convenience of all Indians," he said in a statement.
CPI(M) suggestion
The Tamil Nadu State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has appealed to the Centre to adopt the three-language formula English, Hindi, and Tamil to resolve the present issue of ``imposition'' of Hindi in the lettering of milestones.
In a press statement, N. Varadarajan, the CPI (M) secretary wanted the Centre to take immediate steps to resolve this issue.
