Dhiraj's century props up Maharashtra

KARAD, DEC. 22. Dhiraj Jadhav scored a hundred as Maharashtra ended the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Elite group `B' match against Uttar Pradesh at 305 for seven here on Wednesday. The opener faced 251 deliveries during his 139 (251b, 20 x 4).

In an Elite Group `A' match in Ahmedabad, Kirit Damani's 112 (276, 14 x 4, 1 x 6) was the highlight of Gujarat's 207 for four against Madhya Pradesh.

Bhavik Thaker contributed 52 to the host score. Gujarat elected to bat but ran into trouble with paceman Sanjay Pandey striking early.

It was slow going for Railways after winning the toss against Andhra at Anantpur in an Elite group `A' duel.

The visitors crawled to 165 for six, with off-spinner Venugopala Rao striking thrice.

Holder Mumbai reached 273 for eight against Karnataka in the Elite `A' match at the Wankhede Stadium.

Left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi claimed five for 100. For Mumbai, that has already qualified, Vinayak Mane made 67, and Nishit Shetty 65. Mumbai had chosen to bat.

The proceedings were dramatic in the Tamil Nadu-Baroda Elite `B' clash in Vadodara.

Tamil Nadu was shot out for 152 with paceman Rakesh Patel returning seven for 43, which included a hat-trick. For the visitors, C. Hemant Kumar remained unbeaten with 52 (158b, 5 x 4). Tamil Nadu struck back through pacemen R. Jesuraj (five for 12) and M.R. Shrinivas (three for 11). At close, Baroda was tottering at 64 for nine.

Punjab paceman Vikram R.V. Singh's seven for 75 was instrumental in host Hyderabad being dismissed for 233 in an Elite `B' match.

V.V.S. Laxman top-scored with 79 for Hyderabad. Punjab was 25 for three in reply.

Elite Group `A': In Mumbai: Mumbai 273 for eighth in 90 overs (V. Mane 67, V. Indulkar 47, N. Shetty 65, S. Joshi five for 100) vs Karnataka.

In Ahmedabad: Gujarat 207 for four in 89.3 overs (K. Damani 112 batting, B.D. Thaker 52) vs Madhya Pradesh.

In Kolkata: Bengal 229 for seven in 76.3 overs (R.S. Gavaskar 68, S.G. Das (retd hurt) 47) vs Delhi.

At Anantpur: Railways 165 for six in 90 overs (S. Bangar 43, T.P. Singh 40) vs Andhra.

Elite Group `B':

In Vadodra: Tamil Nadu 152 in 57.4 overs (C. Hemant Kumar 52 not out, R. Patel seven for 43) vs Baroda 64 for nine in 32 overs (R. Jesuraj five for 12, M.R. Shrinivas three for 11).

In Hyderabad: Hyderabad 233 in 62.4 overs (V.V.S. Laxman 79, V.R.V. Singh seven for 75) vs Punjab 25 for three in 19.1 overs.

At Karad: Maharashtra 305 for seven in 90 overs (D. Jadhav 139) vs Uttar Pradesh.

At Rajkot: Sourashtra 160 (D. Mohanty six for 50) vs Orissa 98 for four.

At Jamshedpur: Himachal Pradesh 275 in 80.4 overs (Manvinder Bisla 135, S. Panda four for 55) vs Jharkhand four without loss in four overs.
