Foreign currency seized, two held

CHENNAI, DEC. 22. Customs officers at Anna International Terminal intercepted on suspicion two passengers bound for Kuala Lumpur via Colombo by a Sri Lankan Airlines flight and recovered assorted foreign currencies valued over Rs. 12.16 lakhs.

C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs, Airport and Air Cargo Complex, said investigations revealed that they had one capsule each inside their rectum containing Euros, Pound Sterling, Kuwait Dinar currencies. The two were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, for attempting to smuggle foreign currency out of India.

In another case, a passenger who arrived from Singapore was found to have electronic goods such as handycams, car stereos and micro delivery valves, all valued around Rs.5.72 lakhs. The passenger was remanded to judicial custody.
