THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 22. An inquiry team constituted by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has found that the accident at Pappanamcode on December 20 was caused due to "speeding and overload" and not mechanical failure. The inquiry was conducted by the Executive Director (Technical), Rajan. Two persons were killed and 100 injured in the accident involving an `ordinary' bus attached to Kattakkada depot while proceeding to the Central bus station via Ooruttambalam. A highly-placed official told The Hindu that the bus had been thoroughly checked the previous day and the fissure found in the plate was not the reason for the accident. The driver, Saji Kumar, had joined the KSRTC as an "empanelled driver" just four days before the accident. He was among 33 "empanelled" drivers who had joined the Kattakkada depot recently. There have been allegations that drivers operating parallel service vehicles are deployed on duty by the KSRTC after giving them a few days of training. However, Mr. Kumar stated before the inquiry officials that there was a loud sound when the bus came down the gradient and approached the Sree Ragam Theatre at Pappanamcode. He had to swerve the vehicle sharply to avoid hitting another bus coming from the opposite direction. The official said that according to the driver, he had to swerve the bus sharply again to save a scooterist who was caught in front of the bus. In the process, the bus hit the footpath and ran into a boundary wall before hitting the electric post and turning on its side.
