NEW DELHI, DEC. 22. An Uttaranchal police team is here in the Capital to investigate the explosion in a scrap consignment at a steel unit at Kashipur in Uttaranchal this Tuesday which killed one person and injuring several others. The consignment was routed through the Capital. According to a senior police officer of Udham Singh Nagar district, the container involved in the explosion was meant for one S.G. Steels and had apparently been routed through the Inland Container Depot at Tughlakabad. Stating that the probe was still on, he said the real cause of explosion was yet to be ascertained. It is suspected that the explosion occurred due to some live shell in the scrap. It is learnt that live and dead shells, allegedly dumped by steel-factory owners, are being regularly recovered from different parts of Kashipur since the past two months. Meanwhile, the ICD officials today clarified that it was not necessary for them to screen the scrap consignments meant for factories after the rules were amended in the wake of the Ghaziabad explosion on September 30 in which 10 people were killed. "As per the new rules, such consignments are now supposed to be examined by local Excise authorities," said the officials.
