Death of a visionary

Sir, — The passing away in New Delhi of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, marks the end of an era. Catapulted into the hot seat after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, he began the process that led India to its present economic success.

The latter part of his career was marred by corruption and scams but none can deny his political acumen and statesmanship. India has lost a pragmatic visionary.

Ashish S.Thakare,
Pune

Sir, — A great loss. Mr. Rao played a key role in shaping the India of today. I think Manmohan Singh will vouch for this.

J. Mohanaselvan,
Colombo

Sir, — Mr. Rao recognised the need for an economist as Finance Minister, gave Manmohan Singh the job, and transformed the country's landscape.

His death is a big loss for the country.

Venkat Manthripragada,
Hyderabad

Sir, — A scholar and a statesman of repute, Mr. Narasimha Rao had the distinction of being the country's first Prime Minister from south India.

G. Deepti Anjaneyulu,
Hyderabad
