Hacking of Indian websites on the rise

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 23. There has been an increase in the hacking and defacing of Indian websites as compared to previous years, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

In fact there has been an exponential increase in the hacking of Indian websites from last year.

At the same time, the Government declined to apportion the blame on nationals from Pakistan, as it is not possible to track the source of attack to an Internet protocol address. The total number of Indian websites hacked or defaced stood at 1,480 till November and the figure is likely to go up by the year-end. Last year, 1,687 Indian websites were attacked and in the previous year the figure stood at 288.

The Government had set up the Indian Computer Emergency response Team (CERT-In) for promoting cyber security and helping organisations recover from computer security incidents through help and guidance. The CERT-In has issued a number of advisories to help organisations in the country secure their computer systems and networks against hacking.

CERT-In has also circulated security guidelines to all government organisations and has posted them on its website (www.cert-in.org.in) .

The organisation also conducts regular security workshops for system and network administrators from government, defence, public sector and private sector organisations.
