`Avoid delay in disbursal of retirement benefits'

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, DEC. 23. To make the officials and employees of the district administration aware of the procedures concerned with the general provident fund (GPF) and pensions, the Office of the State Accountant General began a two-day workshop on Wednesday.

Inaugurating the first day proceedings of the workshop, the Deputy Accountant General (Funds II), M. Karunanidhi, said that the exercise was undertaken mainly to clear the doubts and avoid procedural problems that cropped up while dealing with subjects of provident fund, gratuity, pensions and withdrawals and to avoid delay in disbursals.

Senior officials from the Accountant General's Office would visit various district headquarters to conduct such programmes primarily to sensitise the employees who handle these subjects.

He added that the officials at the district level, after the completion of training, would become efficient in dealing with issues related to pension benefits.

They could also handle issues with a clear idea of procedures, which would eliminate unnecessary delay.

To clear doubts

Mr. Karunanidhi pointed out that the facilities that had been created at the AG's Office such as information on telephone and web site would also be explained to them.

"These services will go a long way in clearing the doubts in the minds of people," he added.

The Collector, A. Sukumaran, called upon the officials to adhere to the procedures pertaining to the GPF and pension so that the beneficiaries could receive retirement benefits without any hassles.

All employees should be given pension benefits on the day of their retirement. Pensions should be distributed to pensioners on time.

"Today's officials, they must realise, are tomorrow's pensioners," the Collector added.

The District Treasury Officer, R. Ponnusamy, delivered the special address.

The PA to Collector (Accounts), N. Rajagopalan, welcomed the gathering. The PA to Collector (General), J. Raghavan, proposed a vote of thanks.
