By Our Staff Reporter

The procession carrying the Thanka Anki in a motorised chariot to Sabarimala sets off from the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple on Thursday.

PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC 23. The procession carrying the Thanka Anki, golden attire offered to Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple by the late Chithira Tirunal Balaramavarma of the erstwhile Travancore royal dynasty, set off to Sabarimala from the Parthasarathy Temple on the banks of the Pampa at Aranmula this morning.

The golden attire, weighing 420 sovereigns, decorated on an Ayyappa idol was kept at the Nadappanthal of the Aranmula temple for devotees to have darshan before it was taken to the motorised chariot modelled on the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple at 6.40 a.m.

Heavy rush of devotees

Hundreds of devotees thronged the temple town of Aranmula to attend the annual Thanka Anki procession to Sabarimala. The TDB president, G. Raman Nair, the member Punalur Madhu, the local MLA, Malethu Saaladevi, the District Superintendent of Police, T. Chandran and the Thiruvabharanam Commissioner, G. Lathika, were among those who attended the annual event.

A 30-strong contingent of the Kerala Armed Police escorted the procession led by the Devaswom Special Officer, Narayana Pillai, to Sabarimala.

The procession will reach the Konni Muringamangalam Mahadevar Temple this evening and proceed to the Perinad Sastha Temple, via Attachakkal, tomorrow morning. It will resume its journey from the Perinad Sastha Temple on Friday morning to reach Pampa by noon. Volunteers of the Akhila Bahratha Ayyappa Seva Sanghom will take the Thanka Anki from Pampa to Sabarimala Sannidhanam, later in the afternoon.

The Devaswom authorities will accord a rousing reception to the Anki at Saramkuthi at 3.30 p.m.
