3 special economic zones cleared
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
DEC. 23.
The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath, today cleared the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by Wipro Limited for software development and IT enabled services at Salt Lake Electronic City, Kolkata, at an estimated investment of Rs. 125 crore besides two new such sector-specific zones in Pondicherry.
The Wipro developed zone would provide world-class infrastructure in the form of interconnected multiple towers ideally suited for software development with all support facilities.
It would offer good potential for promoting exports and in generating new employment opportunities.
In addition to the Wipro SEZ, the two new sector-specific SEZs for information technology and automobiles and auto parts respectively at Sedarpet-Karasur (Pondicherry) by the Union Territory Government were also cleared.
The proposed zones are to be developed over 600 acres at an estimated investment of Rs. 200 crores.
The Pondicherry Government proposes to create a Special Purpose Vehicle to implement the projects.
Following the clearance of the above three proposals, the number of special economic zones so far approved comes to 36.
Of these, three SEZs have since become operational and another two zones are now ready for operation. The remaining SEZs are at various stages of implementation.
