`Bring all varsities under purview of commission'

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, DEC. 23. The Karnataka State Linguistic and Minority Professional Institutions' Welfare Committee has welcomed the tabling of a Bill in Parliament on setting up the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government. The committee has, however, urged the Centre to enlarge the scope of the commission by incorporating comprehensive provisions in the Bill.

S. Shafi Ahmed, secretary of the committee, told presspersons here on Thursday that it is necessary to bring all educational boards of State Governments and all universities under the purview of the proposed commission.

The problems faced by minority institutions in obtaining and periodically renewing their affiliation to universities will end only if all universities are brought under the purview of the commission, he said. But the Bill proposes to include only six universities, he said and noted that this might lead to confusion if only some varsities are made responsible to the commission.

He suggested that Lok Sabha members, by proposing an amendment, should insist on bringing all educational boards, councils and universities, including medical, technical and professional varsities, under the purview of the commission. Mr. Ahmed appealed to all MPs to support the bill to ensure its approval in the winter session.

Mr. Ahmed said the Congress president and chairperson of the National Advisory Council, Sonia Gandhi, has been instrumental in the implementation of the National Common Minimum Programme.

Formation of a commission for minority educational institutions is among the several initiatives taken up by the UPA Government, he said.
