GUNTUR, DEC. 23. One of the most complicated surgeries for separating conjoined twins -- attached by their heads -- will be performed at the Government General Hospital in Guntur on Friday by the paediatric surgeon, Y. Nayudamma. The twin sisters - Veena and Vani - were born to a couple in Suryapeta in Nalgonda district on October 15, 2003, but were abandoned by their parents in the hospital here.
Two-stage surgery
Dr. Nayudamma along with his team of 11 doctors will perform the first part of the two-stage surgery, at the GGH here on Friday for four hours. The twins were reared in the hospital by the staff for more than a yearand everything has been prepared for the operation. The parents of the twins - Murali and Nagalakshmi - and the gynaecologist, who delivered them have been invited to be present at the time of surgery.
Case of Iranian twins
The operation has generated a lot of interest among people and medical fraternity now after a similar operation on adult twin sisters in Iran this year. That surgery was a failure. This is the fourth such operation to be performed by Dr. Nayudamma at Guntur. The first one he had performed in 1992 was also a craniopagus (joined at heads) case (Ram and Lakshman). Among the conjoined twins all over the world only two per cent cases were of this type, he said. About 70 per cent were joined at their chest or back, while 6 per cent at their pelvis. He had performed surgeries on all the three types. The second one was in 1993, and the third, in October 2002.
