Free power: TD to oppose `betrayal' by Congress Government

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE, DEC. 23. The former Minister and district Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president, S. Chandramohan Reddy, has asserted that his party will oppose any move by the State Government to dilute free power supply to farmers.

He told reporters here on Thursday that the reported decision of the Government to reconsider the free power issue was nothing but a betrayal and going back on the Congress' election manifesto.

The Telugu Desam Party was heckled when it opposed free power supply and Mr. Reddy recalled how the Congress Government led by Amrinder Singh in the Punjab had retreated from the free power promise within a few weeks of assuming office in the State. The present trend in Andhra Pradesh appears to be on the same lines, he remarked.

All-party meet

The TDP leader took exception to the move to have an all-party meet to consider the issue, bypassing the Assembly which was in session till last week.

It was clear that the Government had no initiative to discuss the issue in the Assembly as there was a live telecast of the proceedings, which would result in a positive commitment by the Government. Mr. Reddy also found fault with the Communists that they should not mention the double standards of the Government.

Mr. Chandramohan Reddy expressed shock at the Government's decision to scrap free power worth Rs.250 crores to colonies inhabited by SCs/STs. He reminded that a decision to scrap the dues were taken by the TDP government, but its implementation was affected by general election. The Congress which came to power had buried the proposal, he alleged.

Mr. Reddy came down on the Government for cutting power supply to the colony of Challa Yanadis, considered poorest of the poor, in Indukurpet mandal of Nellore district.

He wanted to know the fate of the Congress claim that it would divert the Rs. 350 crores, supposed to have been `misused' by the TDP for publicity towards free power supply.
