Christmas celebrations
KOLLAM
Dec. 23.
The 38th joint Christmas celebrations by the various Christian communities in Kollam will be held at the Saint Joseph's Convent School grounds on December 26. The Metropolitan, Joseph Mar Irenios, will inaugurate the celebrations and the Kollam Bishop, Stanley Roman, will deliver the benedictory address.
Alumni meet

The Alumni Day of Calicut Medical College (CMC) and Silver Jubilee celebrations of the 23rd batch will be held at the Medical College auditorium here on Sunday. Prem Menon, president, Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG) in U.S. and Canada, will be the chief guest on the occasion.
Electronic spare parts seized
Thiruvananthapuram
Dec. 23.
Electronic spare parts worth Rs. 40 lakhs were seized by the Customs officials attached to the Air Cargo complex here from an unaccompanied baggage sent from Dubai. The seized goods included 607 load cells, a component used in electronic weighing balances and car accessories, according to the Customs. The baggage was sent from Dubai in the name of one Jose Antony of Valiathura. The seizure of goods was made on the instructions of the Commissioner of Customs, R.K. Jain, and under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, T. C. Rajadas. The Customs had seized a consignment of similar goods worth Rs. 30 lakhs recently. Investigation into the case has begun.
Kesavadev Trust award
The first P. Kesavadev Trust Literary Award has gone to Indrababu, poet and journalist, for his collection of poems "Natyasala." The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, a citation and a statuette, will be presented to him at a function to be held here in February, said P. Govinda Pilllai, patron of the Trust, at a press conference today. It was a jury comprising George Onakkoor, Desamangalam Ramakrishnan and B.D. Dathan, that selected the winner of the award instituted by the Trust in connection with the observance of the birth centenary of the late P. Kesavadev, renowned Malayalam writer. Mr. Indrababu is a member of the editorial staff of the Malayalam daily Kerala Kaumudi in Thiruvananthapuram,
KSEB's New Year gift
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will provide two incandescent bulbs each to all free power connections it gives from January 1 to March 28, 2005, to the families below the poverty line. This is a New Year gift to them, the Electricity Minister, Aryadan Mohammed, said in a statement today. Over 50,000 families will get a 60-watt bulb and a 40-watt bulb through this gesture, he added.
Wanted man held
The Museum police have arrested Satheesh alias Biju, 36, a resident of Thittamelkara in Chengannur, who is wanted in connection with several cases of vehicle thefts and burglaries in houses all over the State. Satheesh is wanted in connection with the theft of two scooters in the capital city, one from Sasthamangalam and the other from M.P. Appan Nagar, police said. He is also suspected to have stolen mobile phones, watches and cash from two houses, one in Sreerangam Lane in Sasthamangalam and the other in Thamarakkulam Lane. The police said Satheesh had twice escaped from custody in 2002 and cases were registered against him by the Poojappura police and the Kottayam West police in this connection.
Rabies: Minister orders probe
The Health Minister, K. K. Ramachandran Master, has asked the Director of Medical Education (DME) to inquire into the allegation that the dogs provided to the final year post-graduate students for dissection had rabies. An official release quoting the Minister said that the DME had been asked to submit the report after conducting the probe. The Medical College authorities had decided on Thursday to administer anti-rabies vaccine to three persons, including a post graduate student, who dissected dogs suspected to be rabid as part of practical examinations.
Metro Rail liaison office opened
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Delhi, has opened its liaison office at the Government Fort Hospital Junction here. The liaison office is for the speedy implementation of Elevated Metro Rail System for Kochi city. The former liaison officer of Konkan Railway, K. Gopinath, is the new liaison officer for Kochi Metro Rail Project in Thiruvananthapuram.
Bomb hoax: train delayed
PALAKKAD
DEC. 23
. The Thiruvanathapuram-Bilaspur Express train was delayed for three hours as it was detained at the Shoranur Railway Station for detailed security check following a bomb hoax call received by the Parappanagadi Railway Station Master on Thursday. The Shoranur police took two passengers, who wanted to catch the train at Shoranur station, into custody on suspicion. The police did not reveal the name of the two but handed them over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The train reached Shoranur station at 12 noon and after security check by the police, bomb squad and dog squad the train was allowed to continue its journey at 2.50 p.m.
Chandy opens dental college at Pariyaram
PARIYARAM
DEC. 23.
The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today formally inaugurated the Pariyaram Dental College on the Pariyaram Medical College campus. Mr. Chandy reached the college in the evening and declared the college open as the scheduled public inaugural function was cancelled in view of the public mourning of the demise of the former Prime Minister, Narasimha Rao. Later, the Chief Minister visited the police constable, Chacko, admitted at the college hospital after he was seriously injured last month when hit by a vehicle at Taliparamba while controlling violent protestors.
