UJJINI (BELLARY DIST), DEC. 23. The State Government was contemplating to bring in legislation to prevent atrocities on women and extend a helping hand and legal protection to the victims, Bhagirathi Marulasiddanagowda, Minister for Women and Child Development and Kottur MLA, has said. Ms. Bhagirathi, who visited her constituency for the first time after being inducted into the Ministry, was speaking to presspersons at Ujjini, temple town in Kudligi taluk, on Wednesday.
Approval sought
She said that the draft copy of legislation had been forwarded to the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs seeking its approval. The main aim of the legislation was to ensure suitable legal protection and necessary assistance to the victims to lead a life without any fear. The Minister said that she would accord top priority to educate women and create awareness about the social evils. She also said that such a step would also ensure that the benefits of the various welfare schemes announced by the Government reached them properly. Ms. Bhagirathi was of the view that a study of the pros and cons had to be made before entrusting the supply of foodgrains through fair price shops and mid-day meal schemes to the self-help groups. She said that it was imperative to find out if the groups could handle the additional responsibility.
Special package
She said that she would urge the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, to arrange for the release of the Government's share towards the Kottur-Harihar rail line, taken up under the Karnataka-Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprise. She said that the Railway Ministry had released its share and the work had been taken up in the region. The Minister informed that the Government had released Rs. 9 crores for the works taken up by Department of Public Works PWD under the Special Package of Schemes for Development. She said that she would take up the matter with the Government to release the required funds for implementing schemes taken up under the special package.
Taluk status
Regarding the demand for declaring Kottur as a taluk, Ms. Bhagirathi while stating that it was a unanimous demand of the people of the region said that she would take up the matter with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, and urge them to make the announcement besides sanctioning adequate funds for the purpose.
