Gulbarga
By Our Special Correspondent
GULBARGA, DEC. 23. It was an agitation with a difference. The protesters did not show their anger by holding a dharna or holding up traffic by organising a rasta roko. Instead they endured the task of rolling on the road in the hot sun to draw the attention of the Government to their plight. Trainees of the Industrial Training Centres (ITC) run by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. in Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli, and Gulbarga participated in today's agitation in Gulbarga.
Indefinite hunger strike
The trainees and volunteers of the All India Students' Federation are on an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding that the State Government lift the ban on recruitment in the corporation and other electricity companies. The agitators took on an "urulu seve" by rolling on the road from the Deputy Commissioner's office to Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk. Around 30 ITC trainees offered the "urulu seve." Many of them suffered bruises and some of fainted in the process. The protesters did not make any attempts to disrupt traffic during the "urule seve" and their protest meeting at Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk.
`Approve proposal'
The ITC trainees have urged the State Government to give its approval to a proposal submitted by the corporation to recruit people to 2,500 vacant posts. They demanded that priority be given to ITC trainees while recruiting candidates. Already two batches of five protesters each who were on indefinite hunger strike have been admitted to hospital after their health deteriorated. A third batch of five ITC trainees is now on a hunger strike.
