MYSORE, DEC. 23. Many students of D.Ed (Diploma in Education) course today boycotted classes and took out a procession against the introduction of a six-month compulsory internship programme as part of the D.Ed curriculum. The "college bandh" call was supported by the All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and the Karnataka State D.Ed Students' Welfare Committee. The boycott of classes was part of the "State-wide bandh" called to protest against the internship programme. The students staged a dharna at Chamarajendra Circle in the city. The students alleged that the internship programme is unscientific. They also alleged that the decision of the Government has been influenced by the policies dictated by the World Bank. Stating that the course has a compulsory three-month teachers' training programme under the guidance of experts, the students questioned the need for a separate internship programme after the completion of the course. The students decided to submit a petition to the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, with regard to their demand and urge him to do away with the compulsory internship programme.
