By Our Staff Correspondent
HASSAN, DEC. 23. The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here on Thursday staged a black flag demonstration in front of the Ambedkar statue near the zilla panchayat office protesting against the failure of the Hassan City Municipal Council (CMC) to provide basic amenities and neglecting of problems by zilla panchayat members. About 60 activists participated in the demonstration. Addressing the agitators, the president of the city unit of the party, Kamal Kumar, said that the democratic system had collapsed in the zilla panchayat owing to power struggle between Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress in the district. Members lured by both the parties were switching sides, forgetting the problems that the people faced, he added. Free textbooks assured by the Government had not reached the poor students even after the completion of second trimester and the midday meal scheme was a total failure, he alleged. Several primary health centres in the district were facing sever shortage of medicines and staff, he said. Though the centenary celebration of CMC was fast approaching, Mr. Kumar said that the president of the CMC was not making any attempt to celebrate the event.
