PUDUKOTTAI, DEC. 23. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) urged the State Government to sanction loans to farmers liberally through cooperative banks in the wake of the prevailing drought conditions. A resolution adopted to this effect at the ninth district conference of the party held here recently said though the State Government had made tall promises on coming to the rescue of the affected farmers, loans from the cooperative bodies were not forthcoming. Another resolution expressed concern over the issue of many spinning mills, powerlooms and industrial estates lying closed for many years aggravating unemployment problem in the district. Effective initiative should be taken for revival of all closed units immediately. Another resolution said the cooperative spinning mill at Aranthangi was not operated to its full capacity. Steps should be taken for operating it to its full capacity. The conference urged the Government to ensure proper functioning of the Agriculture Labourers' Welfare Board. The Kolappan Committee recommendations should be implemented in letter and spirit. The conference raised objection to the use of machinery for harvesting the farm produce and favoured the maximum utilisation of the manpower. All `poramboke' land should be distributed to the landless farm workers and the economically weaker sections. The conference took exception to the arrest of the party cadres, led by G. Veeraiyan, ex-MLA, who attempted to enter the local temple at Minnathur in Kulathur taluk to protest the undeclared ban for entry of dalits. It was decided to hold agitations in all taluk headquarters next week to condemn the police action. N. Sankariah, Central Committee member of the party, G. Veeraiyan, ex-MLA, R. Karuppiah, State committee member, M. Sinnathurai, district secretary (in-charge), spoke. Later, addressing a public meeting to explain the resolutions adopted at the conference, Mr. Sankaraiah said the party took serious objection to the move to privatise profit earning public sector undertakings. He clarified that the left parties would extend continued support to the Centre and would thwart all attempts to unseat it.
