West Bengal no-trust motion dropped after Rao's death
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA,
DEC. 23.
The no-confidence motion against the West Bengal Government moved by the Leader of the Opposition and Trinamool Congress MLA, Pankaj Banerjee, was deemed as "lapsed'' by the Speaker of the Assembly, Hasim Abdul Halim, who adjourned the House for the day as a mark of respect to the memory of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, who passed away earlier in the afternoon.
Discussions on the motion were under way when the news of the death reached the Speaker who, shortly after, adjourned the House following a meeting with the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and leaders of the different political parties represented in the Assembly.
In a condolence message, the Chief Minister said he was "grieved to learn of the passing away of P.V. Narasimha Rao''. "He was an experienced politician and a scholarly person,'' the statement added.
