PATHANAMTHITTA, DEC. 23. The Hindu Aikya Vedi State general secretary, Kummanam Rajashekharan, has alleged that the arrangements being made by the State Government for providing basic pilgrim facilities at Sabarimala can never be considered as a service. Addressing a press conference at Pampa today, Mr. Rajashekharan said that the Travancore Devaswom Board, the administrative body of the Ayyappa Temple, has been paying money for the services being provided by various Government agencies at Sabarimala during the annual pilgrim season.
Paying for services
He said that the TDB has been remitting not less than Rs 1.5-crore to the KSEB for power supply at Sabarimala during the pilgrim season and Rs. 85 lakhs to the Health department for providing healthcare facilities at the pilgrim centre during the period. It is noteworthy that the State Government that gets an additional revenue of not less than Rs. 1,000 crores by way of taxes during the annual Sabarimala pilgrim season has been guilty of its failure to provide even the minimum basic facility of a safe drinking water mechanism, adequate healthcare, hygienic surroundings and safe food at the holy hillock, alleged Mr. Rajashekharan. Mr. Rajashekharan stressed the need to extend the national pilgrim centre status to Sabarimala so that the State would be made liable to provide all basic pilgrim facilities at the pilgrim centre. He has also mooted setting up of an inter-State council for providing basic pilgrim facilities at Sabarimala, by retaining the TDB as the administrative body of the temple.
