KOZHIKODE, DEC. 22. A media workshop on `Adoption and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act 2000,' organised by the Social Welfare Department in association with the Voluntary Co-ordinating Agency (VCA) for adoption, Kerala, stressed the relevance of `parenting through adoption' vis-a-vis the fundamental right of every child to a home. De-institutionalised care through adoption, sponsorship and foster care were the measures suggested at the workshop. The workshop noted that the Supreme Court had laid down guidelines on the issue.
Willingness to adopt
Society's attitude to adoption has undergone sea change. More people are expressing their willingness to adopt children. Usually, couples wanting to adopt a child are forced to wait for long before a child is placed in their care. Another aspect focussed upon at the workshop was the need for adoption to be within the country. Children adopted from other countries often face severe problems when they begin to adapt themselves to a different cultural milieu. This, in turn, creates an adverse impact on them. The workshop dealt with the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, which addresses issues such as `the child in conflict with law' and `child abandoned.'
