LUCKNOW, DEC. 23. The Samajwadi Party president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today said the poll results of Mainpuri and Akbarpur Lok Sabha seats have taught the Congress, BJP and BSP a lesson, following their "conspiracy" against the SP. "The Congress and BJP were riding the same vehicle and their only effort was to help the BSP candidates defeat the SP in these two by-elections," he said at a press conference here. Mr. Yadav alleged a conspiracy was hatched by the Congress government at Delhi with the Election Commission (EC) to countermand the Mainpuri bypolls held on October 13. "During the December 20 polling, central government and EC treated Mainpuri as Pakistan," he quipped. Now these parties (Congress and BJP), who have secured only two to three per cent of votes in these by-polls, have come to know their position among the masses, he said. Announcing that he would personally visit all the district headquarters to make people aware of the Central government's conspiracy to defame the state government on different issues, Mr. Yadav said he would also raise the issue before the EC during the all-party meeting in future. Thanking the people of Mainpuri and Akbarpur for giving their mandate in favour of the SP candidates, the CM said the EC had insulted the people of Mainpuri by countermanding the polls. "People's verdict was in favour of the development oriented government in the State," he added. Disclosing that the central para-military forces sent to Mainpuri was aimed to defeat the SP candidate, he said there were several instances of harassment of genuine voters by them. He also claimed that the popularity of the BSP was sinking day-by-day as the party could not even save the seats won by its leader Ms Mayawati. The SP had wrested the Harora assembly seat and Akbarpur LS seat, earlier held by Ms Mayawati.
