Aravind hits 158

CHENNAI, DEC. 23. Opener R. Aravind's 158 was the highlight of Tamil Nadu's innings as the host made 303 for four in 90 overs against Madhya Pradesh on the opening day of the three-day Plate `C' match in the Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 cricket tournament at the ICL-Guru Nanak ground on Thursday.

Deciding to bat, Tamil Nadu made a strong beginning, thanks to Aravind, who hit two sixes and 21 boundaries in his over five-and-a-half hour stay in the middle.

Aravind also had two fruitful partnerships — 98 runs with H. Gopinath (57) for the second wicket and 94 runs with S. Anand (41) for the third.

In another match, being played at the Mayajaal ground, Tripura, put in by Hyderabad, was skittled out for 134 with medium pacer Alfred Absolem and left arm spinner Pragyan picking up three wickets a piece.

Udai Deb Barma top scored with 25 followed by Kishore Muhuri (24). Udai and Abijeet Dey (21) added 48 runs for the fourth wicket.

Ravinder bats well

At Visakhapatnam, a 93-run fourth wicket stand between Ravinder Singh (93, 6x1, 4x14) and Rupeet Inder Singh (35, 6x1, 4x3) helped Punjab score 239 for five at close on Thursday on the first day of the Plate Group B match against Saurashtra here.

In the other match, Railways was well ahead of a lowly Sikkim, having scored 162 for one after dismissing the rival for 130 in its first innings. The second wicket stand between Rakesh Mishra (78, 6x1, 4x12) and Jitender Bhagel (87, 4x10) had so far yielded 142 runs.

Earlier, leg-spinner Harpreeth Saini claimed five wickets and off-spinner Irfan Khan picked up three for Railways.

Azhar, Pradeep sparkle

At Bangalore, skippers Azhar Balakhia and A.G. Pradeep slammed unbeaten centuries and helped their teams dominate the opening day of the Plate Group B second round matches here on Thursday.

Azhar's century (133 batting, 214b, 14 x 4, 2 x 6) guided Gujarat to 263 for six against Jharkhand while A.G. Pradeep also played a captain's knock (142 batting, 213b, 18 x 4, 1 x 6) and helped Andhra post 310 for five against Jammu and Kashmir.

Ganesh hits century

At Mumbai, Karnataka's Ganesh Satish notched an undefeated 126 against Haryana in the Elite Group A match at the MIG Club on Thursday. Sent into bat at No. 4, Satish hit 17 fours in his 326 minute 264-ball essay and was involved in two century plus partnerships of 138 and 107 with V. Cheluvaraj and R. Jonathan for the third and fourth wicket. Karnataka had lost Gaurav Dhiman and Pawan Gargi at 27.

In another league match played at the Western Railway Ground, Mahalaxmi, Maharashtra recovered from 116 for 6 to make 305 against Goa, thanks to a fighting 67 by the No. 6 batsman Avinash Gadgil and No. 8 in Ajinkya Joshi who made a 97 ball 86 with 13 fours and one six. Gadgil and Joshi raised 147 runs in 30. 3 overs for the seventh wicket. For Goa the successful bowler was Harshad Gadekar who took 6 wickets in 21 overs.

Tripura 134 in 87.4 overs (Alfred Absolem three for 34, Pragyan Ohja three for 19) v Hyderabad at Mayajaal ground.

Tamil Nadu 303 for four in 90 overs (R. Aravind 158, H. Gopinath 57, S. Anand 41) v Madhya Pradesh.

At Visakhapatnam:

Punjab 239 for five in 94 overs (Ravinder Singh 93, Vipin Kumar 52 batting) vs Saurashtra.

Sikkim 130 in 64.4 overs (Harpreeth Saini five for 27) vs Railways 162 for one in 36 overs (Rakesh Mishtra 78 batting, Jitender Bhagel 69 batting).

At Bangalore

Gujarat 263 for six in 96.4 overs (Azhar Balakhia 133 batting, Gauraj Shah 74, Shahbaz Nadeem four for 93) vs Jharkhand.

Andhra 310 for five in 94 overs (A.G. Pradeep 142 batting, M. Seshavali 44) vs Jammu and Kashmir.

At Mumbai

Karnataka 291 for 4 in 96 overs (V. Cheluvaraj 76, G. Satish batting 126, R. Jonathan 43) v Haryana

Maharashtra 305 in 84. 2 overs (Avinash Gadgil 67, Ajinkya Joshi 86, Harshad Gadekar 6 for 104, Kashinath Chari 3 for 56) v Goa 10 for no loss in 5 overs.
