VELLORE, DEC.23. The judicial custody of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, in the Sankararaman murder case and the Radhakrishnan assault case was today extended till January 6 through videoconferencing. The Acharya was taken to the video-conferencing room in the central prison here around 3 p.m. The judicial magistrate (I), Kancheepuram, G. Uthamaraj, hearing the Sankararaman murder case, earlier went to the Principal Sessions Court, Chengalpattu, where the videoconferencing facility was available. He came on the computer screen at 3.15 p.m. and informed the Sankaracharya that his judicial custody was being extended till January 6. The magistrate also enquired about his health, and the Acharya replied that he was all right. S. Umamaheswari, XXIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, trying the Radhakrishnan assault case, came on the computer screen at 3.45 p.m. and informed the seer that his custody was being extended till January 6. The previous remand extension in the Radhakrishnan assault case and the murder case was also made through videoconferencing on December 9 and 10. The Sankaracharya, who was arrested and lodged in the central prison here on November 12 in the Sankararaman murder case, was served with the arrest intimation in the Radhakrishnan case by the Chief Investigation Officer, S.P. Sakthivelu, on November 23. He was taken to the Saidapet court on November 26 when the Metropolitan Magistrate remanded him to judicial custody till December 9. This was the second remand extension for the seer in the Radhakrishnan assault case and the third in the murder case.
