Gagandeep Singh signals the end of Vinay Kumar of Hyderabad.
KARAD, DEC. 23. Ranjit Khirid had an outstanding day for Maharashtra, scoring a fluent 80 and then claiming five for 45 with his medium pace. At close on day two of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match here on Thursday, Uttar Pradesh, replying to the host's 394, was 229 for eight. For the visiting side, Suresh Raina made 67 and Rizwan Shamshad 60. With left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni grabbing five for 39, Mumbai secured a 126-run lead over Karnataka in the Elite A game at the Wankhede Stadium. Openers Barrington Rowland (43) and Robin Uthappa (39) added 82 before Karnakata suffered a collapse. Off-spinner Ramesh Powar, with four wickets, supported Kulkarni well. Earlier, Mumbai was dismissed for 292 as left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi finished with six for 102.
Laxman dazzles again
With S. Vishnuvardhan and Kaushik Reddy striking thrice, Punjab was bowled out for 105, 128 runs adrift of Hyderabad's first innings total. The home team was 147 for six in its second innings with Test star V. V. S. Laxman scoring an unbeaten 59, following his first innings 79. Kirit Damani, overnight 112, progressed to 142 (385b, 18x4, 1x6) as Gujarat reached 353 in Ahmedabad. Paceman Sunil M. Dholpure came up with a five-wicket haul for Madhya Pradesh. The visitor was 72 for three at close. The 133-run unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership between Mithun Manhas (79) and Vijay Dahiya (68) took Delhi to 184 for three in reply to Bengal's 240. Earlier in the day, Delhi paceman Amit Bhandari returned five for 55.
Elite Group A: At Mumbai: Mumbai 292 in 94.3 overs (V. Mane 67, V. Indulkar 47, N. Shetty 65, S. Joshi six for 102) and two for one in three overs vs Karnataka 166 in 83.2 overs (Barrington Rowland 43, R. Powar four for 70, N. Kulkarni five for 39).
At Ahmedabad: Gujarat 353 in 152.3 overs (K. Damani 142, B. D. Thaker 52, S. M. Dholpure five for 70) vs Madhya Pradesh 72 for three in 27 overs.
At Kolkata: Bengal 240 in 82.2 overs (Rohan Gavaskar 68, S. G. Das 50, A. Bhandari five for 55) vs Delhi 184 for three in 66 overs (M. Manhas 79 batting, V. Dahiya 68 batting).
At Anantapur: Railways 263 in 122.5 overs (S. Bangar 43, T. P. Singh 40. R. Ali 44, Venugopala Rao four for 34) vs Andhra 120 for six in 59 overs.
Group B: At Vadodara: Tamil Nadu 152 and 183 in 75.1 overs vs Baroda 64 in 32.1 overs (R. Jesuraj six for 12) and 13 for two in 8.2 overs.
At Hyderabad: Hyderabad 233 and 147 for six in 48.2 overs (V. V. S. Laxman 59 batting) vs Punjab 105 in 51 overs (A. Kakkar 48).
At Karad: Maharashtra 394 in 117 overs (D. Jadhav 139, R. Khirid 80) vs Uttar Pradesh 229 for eight in 61 overs (S. Raina 67, R. Shamshad 60, Khirid five for 45).
