Signal contribution to education

By Ravi Reddy

HYDERABAD, DEC. 23. The former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao left an indelible mark on the education system in Andhra Pradesh by introducing a series of reforms and innovative schemes to promote excellence.

Rao's penchant for education saw the system making a rapid transformation. Bifurcation of the Department of Public Instruction into Departments of School and Higher Education was his gift. For the first time in the country, the State introduced regional language as the medium of instruction at the higher education level.

Telugu promotion

Freedom fighter, M.L. Narasimha Rao, said that the Telugu Akademi was the brainchild of the former Prime Minister. Production of Telugu texts and promotion of translation activity was taken up in a big way. "He was closely associated with Sri Krishnadevaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam," he said, cherishing the moment when the leader attended the Gandhi jayanti three days after becoming the Chief Minister.

Mr. Rao, who penned PV's biography, still remembered an incident when the former Prime Minister, after stepping down as Chief Minister, came to a printing press and read the proof of a souvenir being brought out for the Sashtipurthi of poet Kaloji Narayana Rao.

An experimental residential institution called `Silver Jubilee College' was established in Kurnool to mark 25 years of Independence at his initiative. Admissions were purely on the basis of an entrance examination and it became a trendsetter.

Establishment of a Collegiate cell in SCERT, introduction of Satellite Instruction and Television Education (SITE) and a separate Department of Educational Technology in SCERT were his contributions.

Academic Staff Colleges on the lines of the Collegiate Cell, oriental colleges and deemed universities like Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidya Peeth in Tirupati were set up by him. His multi-lingual abilities and literary talents won him universal praise. `Sahasraphan', a Hindi version of Viswanadha Satyanarayana's `Veyi Padagalu' brought him the Central Sahitya Academy award.
