Case against

petrol pumps

CUDDAPAH: The Regional Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology, Kurnool, P.V. Viswanatham, and staff booked cases against two petrol pumps at Mydukur, where faulty metering was detected. In a statement on Thursday, Mr. Viswanatham called upon people to report cases of under-weighing to the District Inspector's office on ph. No. 244339.

CUDDAPAH: A free preliminary training camp will be held here from January 2 for the Army recruitment to be held at Ongole on January 17 and 18.

In a statement on Thursday, the SP, V.C. Sajjanar, urged applicants to enrol their names in police stations. He also said that passport applications would hereafter be received only on Mondays.

Motorcycle

rally

CUDDAPAH: An all-India motorcycle rally by NCC cadets will reach the NCC office at Cuddapah on December 25 evening, the Commanding Officer of 30 Andhra Battalion of NCC, Maj. Y.H. Reddy, and Second Officer, M. Vivekananda Reddy, said on Thrusday. The rallyists would make a night halt at Government Arts College here and leave for Chennai on December 26.

Warangal SP

transferred

HYDERABAD: The Warangal SP, K. Sreenivasa Reddy, has been transferred and the Additional Superintendent of Police, Bellampally in Adilabad district, M. Stephen Raveendra, has been posted in his place.

Mr. Reddy was not given any posting.

ISTE local unit launched

NALGONDA: The Registrar, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, B.C. Jinaga, formally launched the local staff chapter of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) at a function at Swami Ramananda Tirtha Institute of Science and Technology here on Thursday.

Lauding the institution for imparting quality education and also for providing better facilities, he said that it was one of the four best colleges among 250 institutions affiliated to the JNTU. He further said that students hailing from rural areas were doing well in engineering with their sheer discipline and hard work.

G.K. Viswanath, professor, JNTU, P. Narsimha Reddy, principal, Sri Nidhi Institute of Technology, K. Anantha Reddy, chairman, SRTIST and T. Venkat Reddy, principal, also spoke.

Nominated posts to be filled soon

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Keshava Rao, has said nominated posts for various corporations will be announced by the month-end.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Rao said the party had taken into consideration loyalty and educational qualifications to shortlist the nominees. Though, 4,000 applications had been received, the party had done a careful job by giving 50 per cent weightage to the weaker sections.

On the demand from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi for nominated posts, the PCC chief said there had been pressure from the Congressmen not to entertain such a request.

TDP flays change of rules

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday charged the Government with changing the rules relating to renewal of liquor licences to benefit Congress leaders and party workers.

Addressing a press conference, the TDP leaders -- N. Janardhana Reddy, T. Seetharam and E. Dayakar Rao -- said the recent amendment to the Andhra Pradesh Indian Liquor and Foreign Liquor Rules was intended to make the licence-holder go round officials and politicians.

This was the reason why the periodicity of licence was reduced from one year to a month and the renewal linked to the policy changes from time to time. The Government should clarify why it opted for the change. They also asked why the Government had developed cold feet on the free power issue within six months of assuming office. Police, Maoists exchange fire

VISAKHAPATNAM: An exchange of fire took place between naxalites of the CPI (Maoist) and the police at Tokalapalem village of Koyyuru mandal in the district on Thursday. A police team was going towards the village when a group of naxalites, who were coming from the opposite direction, allegedly opened fire without provocation. The police party returned the fire.

The naxalites left behind cooking utensils, blankets and caps before fleeing from the scene. The Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kumar Jain, warned the CPI (Maoist) members not to move about in villages with weapons. He said that action would be taken against them, if they did not comply with the orders.

Five hurt in coal mine mishap

KARIMNAGAR: In a freak mishap, five coal workers were injured when the roof of a mine in Singareni Collieries company limited, Ramagundam division, caved in on Thursday.

Reports reaching here said that during the morning shift, coal excavation was being carried out at the third seam, eighth level and when the blasting was done, the roof caved in at the seventh level injuring the coal fillers who were working at the spot. The injured have been identified as G. Veeraiah, R. Jailu, K. Ramanaiah, Bapu Narsaiah and A. Chandraiah. All have been shifted to Singareni Area hospital.

Congress leaders pay tributes

HYDERABAD: A pall of gloom descended on Gandhi Bhavan, the Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters here on Thursday evening as the news of demise of the former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, was received. The national flag flying atop the party headquarters was lowered. The PCC president, K. Keshava Rao, and other leaders garlanded the portrait of Narasimha Rao, which was placed at the entrance of the party office. Senior party leaders made a beeline to the party office and paid floral tributes to the departed leader. The APCC chief, office bearers and executive members paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister.

YSR cancels Tirupati visit

TIRUPATI: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, cancelled his two-day visit to the temple city on Thursday following the demise of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao. He was to participate in the closing ceremony of the TANA's folk festival here.

Paritala appears before court

PULIVENDULA: The defamation suit filed by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, against the Penugonda MLA and TDP State secretary, Paritala Ravindra, was admitted on Thursday and posted for hearing on January 18.

Mr. Reddy and Mr. Ravi appeared before the Pulivendula Junior Civil Judge, G. Kanthimathi, amid heavy police bandobust near the court.Speaking to newsmen at Pulivendua R & B guest house later, Mr. Ravi said he would prove his charges against Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy.

No postponement of exam

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has ruled out postponement or deferment of the Group I exams scheduled to be held from January 19. Speaking to reporters after discussions here today he said another round of Group I exams would be held through a separate notification if more than 100 vacant posts were available.

Yeleru: bank officials seek time

HYDERABAD: The vice-president, ING Vysya Bank, D.Sivasankar, and two other officials appeared before the B.K. Somasekhara Commission, probing the Yeleru land scam, today and sought reasonable time to prepare for their defence.

IVRS facility for pensioners

Hyderabad: An interactive voice response system (IVRS), through which pensioners can get details about their GPF and pensions, was inaugurated in the Accountant-General office here today by S. Anwar, special chief secretary.

To get the benefit out of the IVRS, the pensioners need only to ring the telephone number 040-23231212 if from outside and 9540-23231212 if from within the State. The service is available round the clock and in three languages--English, Hindi and Telugu.

Dry weather forecast

Hyderabad: The minimum temperatures fell at one or two places in Coastal Andhra and changed little in Telangana and Rayalaseema on Thursday. Anantapur and Arogyavaram emerged as the coldest places for the day by registering the lowest night temperatures at 14 degree Celsius.

Mainly dry weather will prevail in the State on Friday.
