BANGALORE, DEC. 23. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has assured a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party MPs from Karnataka that he will look into the issue of ensuring that the Bagalkot rehabilitation package reached the displaced families and the gauge conversion of Bijapur-Gadag railway line is speeded up. The BJP parliamentarians, who staged a dharna outside Parliament House on Wednesday, called on Dr. Singh today when he gave this assurance after receiving a memorandum from them. Dr. Singh told the MPs that he will call for a report from the Railway Ministry and see how the gauge conversion work could be speeded up, and take up the issue of rehabilitation of those displaced by the building of Alamatti reservoir with the State Government. The BJP MPs, led by the party General Secretary, H.N. Ananth Kumar, demanded implementation of the Rs. 638-crore package for those displaced by the construction of Narayanpur and Alamatti dams. The memorandum said the construction of the dams had led to the submersion of 136 villages under Alamatti reservoir and 141 villages under Narayanpur reservoir. During the Stage II of the Upper Krishna Project, 22 additional villages were submerged.
