`Refrain from alcohol'

NEW DELHI DEC. 23. The Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) has cautioned people with obesity, diabetes and heart disease to refrain from alcohol if possible and if they cannot to limit their intake. Addressing a group discussion earlier this week, the HCFI President, K K Aggarwal, said that five peg intake at one time can be associated with sudden cardiac death, accelerated hypertension with brain hemorrhage, acute heart attack or irregularities of the heart.

Dr. Aggarwal said the safe limit of alcohol was 30 ml of whisky or 50ml of wine in one hour and not more than 60 ml of whisky or 100 ml of wine in one day.

Interior design show opens

NEW DELHI DEC. 23. The "Inside Outside Mega Show'', the largest event on interior design, furniture and furnishings, building and construction industries, was inaugurated today by interior designer, Sunita Kohli, at Pragati Maiden here. Organised for the 17th consecutive year in the city by Business India Exhibitions and the leading interior magazine, Inside Outside, (both divisions are part of the Business India Group), around 200 companies are represented in the exhibition. Participating companies include Kajaria Tiles, R.K. Marble, Asian Granito, Hindustan Sanitaryware, Saint Gobain Glass, Grasim Industries, Mars Industries, Century Plyboards, North West Switchgear, Oyeste Bath concepts, LG Electronics, D.S. Doors, Everest Industries, De Office Furniture, DP Woodtexh, Ratnagiri Ceramics, Oikos B&R Brass Collections, JK Polymer, Eureka Forbes, DM Wall Systems, Intex Designer Tiles and Ramco Marketing. The exhibition is being held at Hall Nos. 9, 10 and 11 at Pragati Maiden till December 26.

Research lab inaugurated

NEW DELHI DEC. 23. The Director General of Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General J.R. Bhardwaj, today inaugurated the Imunodeficiency Centre Research Laboratory at the Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment here. The laboratory, which is the result of a joint venture between the office of the Director General Armed Forces Medical Services, the National AIDS Control Organisation and Base Hospital, is the first-of-its-kind in the armed forces to provide comprehensive care to the HIV and AIDS patients.

Meet on climatic changes

NEW DELHI DEC. 23. Indian and Russian experts on climatic changes discussed various impacts of global warming on humanity at a seminar titled "Technological Aspects of Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol-Indian and Russian Approaches" at the Ferozeshah Road here on Wednesday.

The seminar was organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC). Through a multi-media presentation, the Head, Science and Technology Section of RCSC, Alexander E. Petrov, highlighted the formulation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the accompanying developments that led to the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in Japan by representatives of more than 160 countries.
