The Karimnagar bond

KARIMNAGAR, DEC. 23. Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, the proud son of Telangana, brought laurels to the country in general and Karimnagar district in particular. He contributed his mite for the development of the backward district.

He launched cooperative movement in the district by constituting the Mulkanoor Ccooperative Bank in 1956 in Mulkanoor village of the district. He was its vice-chairman and had continued as its member.

The Mulkanoor Cooperative Bank had emerged a leading cooperative institution in the State and recently it launched the Mulkanoor Cooperative Women's Dairy.

Khadi movement

He was instrumental in promotion of the khadi movement in the district and formed the Vavilala Khadi Bandar in Vavilala village of Jammikunta mandal by becoming its chairman. The handlooms produced by the Khadi Bandar were popular in the country. During the Orissa cyclone, Narasimha Rao had donated to the victims Rs 1.5 lakh worth handloom clothes produced in the Vavilala Khadi Bandar.

On the education front, he made significant contribution as governing council member of the Sri Rajarajeshwara (SRR) degree college in Karimnagar town in 1956. To provide irrigation to upland regions of the district, he proposed the SRSP flood flow canal and laid the foundation stone for the project in 1993. As a three-time legislator of the Manthani constituency, he was responsible for construction of two bridges on the river Godavari at Manthani and Somanpalli.

He proposed railway connectivity to Karimnagar town from Peddapalli to Karimnagar and Nizamabad in 1993. He had donated his lands to landless poor in his native Vangara village. He is remembered as `peddayana' and `dora' in the district.
