MANGALORE, DEC. 23. Importance given by a society for development of the arts is an indicator of its cultural standards, J.S. Khande Rao, artist and winner of Nadoja Award for 2004, said here on Thursday. The arts can flourish only with society's support, he added. Inaugurating Varnotsava, a three-day national-level camp for artists organised by Dakshina Kannada Karavali Utsav Committee, the Association of British Scholars local chapter and Artists' Combine, Prof. Rao said social patronage to the arts helps local culture flourish. Quoting art critics, he said art creates new forms of beauty and awakens new thoughts in the minds of its creator. One has to understand a work of art in two contexts: the very purpose of its creation and most importantly, its social import. Opining that works of art usually reflect life around an artist, he said real effort and dedication is needed to depict it on canvas. Kartar Singh, Deputy Director, British Council, British Deputy High Commission (South India), Chennai, who was the chief guest, described Mangalore as an integral centre for art and culture. The council will be happy to strike a partnership with stakeholders in its endeavour to promote local arts and culture and take it to a larger audience, he said. The council, through the local chapter of the association, will be happy to arrange an exhibition of the works created by artists at this camp in Chennai.
