COIMBATORE, DEC 23. The District Industries' Centre (DIC) here plans to identify and submit two to three proposals for assistance under the Rural Industrial Cluster project by the end of this fiscal. The DIC officials told The Hindu that there were 22 industrial cooperative societies operating in the district. Several of these are in the rural areas. Under the rural industrial cluster project, the proposals approved by the Centre would be provided a grant of Rs. 5 lakhs. This could be used for various purposes such as infrastructure development. The objective is to take up modernisation, introduce new technologies and impart training to the workers in the select cluster so that the cost of production was reduced and volume increased over period of three years. The identified clusters would prepare an action plan to achieve these objectives (double the turnover in three years from the current level).
Societies identified
The DIC had earlier identified nearly five societies and submitted proposals for the development of units in these societies. However, there was a need to revise the proposals. Some of the areas of activity identified were coir, metal vessel making and herbal product production. The officials pointed out that in Annuparpalayam the vessel-making units could have common facilities for polishing the products. Similarly, in herbal product making, the units could take up mass production of herbal products.
