Arrested with fake currency

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 23. Two persons, who allegedly printed and distributed counterfeit currency notes, were arrested by the Operation Cell of the North Delhi police this Wednesday. Fake notes worth Rs. 24,300, a computer, printer, a scanner-cum-copier and other stationary were recovered from their possession.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi), Rajesh Khurana, the Operation Cell received a tip-off about the movements of some people dealing in fake currency. On Wednesday, they learnt that the suspects would come near Shastri Nagar Metro station at Sarai Rohilla in a Maruti van to deliver a consignment.

Subsequently, a trap was laid and one suspect arrested. During interrogation, he identified himself as Suresh. The police recovered from him 86 notes of Rs. 100 and 28 notes of Rs. 50 denominations. Suresh disclosed that he had received the notes from A Swaminathan and Ilengo, who lived at Pappan Kalan. At his instance, the police raided the place and arrested Swaminathan and recovered rest of the notes along with a computer system, papers and even Mahatma Gandhi's monogram from the premises. The other accused, Ilengo is still at large.

During interrogation, Swaminathan revealed that he belonged to Tamil Nadu. He came in contact with Ilengo during a train journey. Ilengo told him he used to print fake currency notes and lured him to join him against good commission. At his instance, Swaminathan started circulating the notes in the open market. Swaminathan allegedly used to pay Rs. 1,000 to Suresh for supplying currency notes worth Rs. 10,000.

The police said they were conducting raids to arrest Ilengo and his other accomplices.
