NEW DELHI, DEC. 23 . Two persons have been arrested by the Narcotics and Crime Prevention Cell of the Delhi police for allegedly smuggling heroin and opium in two separate incidents. The police recovered 20 kg of opium and 1.5 kg of heroin from them. Following a tip-off, the police had a trap near Railway Bridge in Shakti Nagar on December 21. The suspect appeared on a scooter around 12 noon and was apprehended by the waiting police team. A search of his scooter led to the recovery of 20 kg opium. The contraband had been concealed in a cavity carved out in the petrol tank of the scooter and also in its boot. During interrogation, the accused, identified as Dalip Singh, a resident of Agra, told the police that he had been smuggling opium into the Capital using a unique modus operandi. After stuffing the opium in the cavity of the petrol tank, which left space for only about a litre of petrol, he would book the scooter from Agra to Delhi on a train. He would then come to Delhi and receive the scooter from the station. Subsequently, he would go around in the Capital supplying opium to his contacts. The police said he was involved in the illegal trade for the past six years. In the second incident, a 48-year-old man was arrested from Noida More in East Delhi and 1.5 kg of heroin was recovered from his possession. The accused, identified as Mohammad Saifuddin, a resident of Badayun in Uttar Pradesh, was also arrested on December 21. The police said Saifuddin was wanted in another case of possessing narcotics. Two persons had been arrested for allegedly smuggling heroin on December 8, but Saifuddin had managed to escape in that raid. The police said the supplier has been identified and efforts were on to nab him. Both the accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act and further investigations are on.
