VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 23. Accurate forecast of monsoon is essential for India which is largely dependent on agriculture, says the Secretary to the Union Department of Ocean Development, Harsha K. Gupta. Inaugurating the two-day national seminar on "Half-a-century progress in oceanographic studies of north Indian Ocean since Prof. La Fond's contribution" (HAC PO), being organised by the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography of Andhra University here on Thursday, Dr. Gupta said that oceanographic studies were important in forecasting monsoon.
`Utilise data'
"The available data, which are being collected and compiled, should be used extensively. The data are available on website also, and students and research scholars must take lead in utilising the same," he said. He wanted the data to meet the needs of the country, for which further research was required. Obtaining data from abroad was expensive, he pointed out. However, the National Institute of Oceanography in Chennai prepared data for a particular need for Rs.20 lakhs, which would cost Rs.60 lakhs if taken from other countries, Dr. Gupta said. The AU Department should carry forward the good work done by Prof. La Fond, he emphasised. The Vice-Chancellor, Y.C. Simhadri, recalled the great work done by Prof. La Fond, considered "the father of oceanography in India", by making AU his base. The Principal of the AU College of Science and Technology, K.V. Ramana Murthy, presided.
