Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 23. The Mayor and Congress leader, Rajana Ramani, on Thursday described the demise of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, as an irreparable loss. ``His death has caused a vacuum,'' she said in a condolence message. Ms. Ramani recalled his contribution for the development of Andhra Pradesh in general and Visakhapatnam in particular and said that the Congress had lost a fatherly figure, who retired from politics after demitting the office of Prime Minister. The Visakha-II MLA, Saripalli Rangaraju, said that PV brought laurels to the country and the State in particular as the first `Telugu bidda' to occupy the Prime Minister's post.
Scholar PM
His scholarship and administrative acumen were without parallel, the Congress MLA said. On hearing the news, the former Rajya Sabha member, Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, rushed to Delhi. PV during his last visit to the city on October 6, 2002, not only released a book written by Yarlagadda -- `Hindi Sahitya Charitra' -- but also wrote a 24-page preface. The staff and resource persons of the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) run by the Ministry of HRD, remembered the golden moments of PV's last visit to the institute.
Qualities praised
The JSS director, N. Babayya, said PV would be remembered for all time to come as a great scholar and linguist. The former Telugu Desam MP and industrialist, M.V.V.S. Murthi, said that the death of PV was a great loss to the nation. The BJP held an emergency meeting to condole the death of PV. The party national executive member, P.V. Chalapathi Rao, the city unit president, Bandaru Rangamohan and the media cell incharge, D.S. Verma, said that PV was a man of principles and ideals.
