Tiruchi
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, DEC. 23 . The work on the construction of all 408 solid waste management sheds, one for each panchayat, on an outlay of Rs. two crores is nearing completion and all sheds will be put to use by Pongal, the Collector, V. Pandian, said. Speaking at a function organised jointly by the Tiruchi District Total Sanitation Campaign and Exnora International to launch solid waste management and effective micro-organism usage at Peramangalam near here today, Mr. Pandian said the sheds were being constructed under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) scheme of the District Rural Development Agency with 75 per cent funding by the Centre and the rest by the State Government. The SGRY was aimed at generating employment and the DRDA had merged the Total Sanitation Campaign with it for the creation of basic infrastructure, besides generating job opportunities in the rural areas. The effective micro-organism technique was farmer-friendly as it not only eliminated the harmful bacteria but also strengthened the life-cycle of useful bacteria. It would eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers and thereby enhance the agricultural productivity. All agricultural and degradable wastes would be effectively decomposed under this new technology. The fast rate of decomposition with a faster reaction would enrich the soil fertility. This concept would not only come in handy for the management of solid waste materials but also help to keep households neat and tidy, free from pollution. He appealed to the people to make use of this concept in an effective manner. The Project Officer, DRDA, M. Manohara Singh, said all solid waste management sheds would be handed over to local women self-help groups for their maintenance and the SHGs had already been identified. The effective micro-organism usage was being introduced in Tiruchi district for the first time and this activity would augment the revenue of the SHGs to a considerable extent, he added. Mr. Manohara Singh said the commercial production of the micro-organism, invented in Japan, was being done in West Bengal at present. It is being procured from Auroville near Pondicherry. N. Nedumaran, chairman, District Panchayat, Mallika Chinnasamy, MLA, Lucas, an expert in effective micro-organism from Auroville, and N. Subburaman, Director, SCOPE NGO, which is extending technology support to the programme, were among those who spoke.
