Multimedia training for policemen

MADURAI, DEC. 23. A two-day multimedia training programme for policemen and `Friends of Police' of Madurai district began here today.

Inaugurating the training, the Superintendent of Police, Madurai Rural, T. Sundaresan, stressed the need for community policing for an effective prevention of crimes.

The police-public ratio in the State was 1:1000, he said adding that the police could make use of the FoPs for regulating crowd during festival time, regular beats, night patrolling and natural calamities.

The FoPs should act as a bridge between the people and the police. They should guide the aggrieved people to get natural justice with the help of the police.

Stating that Section 43 of Criminal Procedure Code allowed even the common man to arrest people for a cognisable offence, he said the FoP could also detain the culprits. Mr. Sundaresan handed over caps and bands to the volunteers of FoPs.

The Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police (Prohibition), A.P. Arumugam, the Samayanallur Deputy Superintendent of Police and the course coordinator, K. Renggarjan, spoke.

Two resource persons from Chennai, Usha Rani and Uma Maheswari, would impart training in developing a right attitude, crime prevention and relationship building to the participants.
