MADURAI, DEC. 23. Orders on the monthly State pension of Rs.3000 and a medical allowance of Rs.15 were handed over to two freedom fighters of Madurai district by the Public Works Department Minister, O. Panneerselvam, at a function held at the Collectorate here today. Mr. Panneerselvam gave away the orders to K. S. R. Ramasamy of Kulaththul Vaaipatti and K. Thavamani of M. Kallupatti. He also presented an order on payment of State ex-servicemen family pension to R. Mangalam of Nagamalai Pudukottai. She will get a pension of Rs.1500, along with a medical allowance of Rs.15 per month. The Minister claimed that the initiatives taken by the Chief Minister to make the State the `number one' in the country had yielded results, as evidenced by the fact that the State occupying the top slot in industry, second in education and first in wind power generation. To provide better infrastructure in rural areas, a scheme had been launched to lay bitumen roads in all villages. He distributed assistance worth Rs.26 lakhs to 18 self-help groups. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, said SHG members should use the funds for enhancing their economic status. The Usilampatti MLA, L. Santhanam, spoke.
