MADURAI, DEC. 23. A massive employment-oriented training for girl students will begin in all government schools in Madurai district on January 1. The Education Department has begun the process of launching the project for students of VI, VII and VIII Standard. "The project will benefit over 60,000 girls to acquire skills for self-employment," the Chief Educational Officer, R. Pitchai, told The Hindu here today. Now, over 400 teachers from various schools are undergoing the training here under the auspices of the Jan Shikshan Sansthan, with funds provided by the Sarva Shiksha Abhayan. These teachers will, in turn, impart skills to the students from January to March. The SSA funds of Rs.10 lakhs would be spent for the three-month period of training, he said, adding that the entire programme was part of a larger objective of providing life-oriented quality education in government schools. The training would cover 15 trades including tailoring, embroidery, toy-making, doll-making, book binding, painting and drawing, paper products, jam and pickle preparation and wool works. Over 20 resource persons from the Jan Shikshan Sansthan are imparting training to teachers. Mr. Pitchai said special teachers of government schools were being trained for the project while subject teachers had also shown a keen interest in undergoing the training. Special classes for students would be held in the evenings for one hour. "The regular classes will not be affected and in co-educational schools the girls will stay back for learning," the CEO said. The department plans to distribute the SSA funds equally among all schools. According to S. Madhavan, Assistant Educational Officer, this is the first time such a training is being imparted to students and teachers of Madurai district. A team of education officials visited the venue, where 424 teachers are participating in the training. The teachers have planned to display the products made by them at the venue on the last day of the programme.
